Chapter’s 1-4: Louella envisions a summer sabatical from teaching with a focus on her reunited family; all home from university. Her summer getaway is quickly erased at an evening barbeque where the new cocktail is appropriately named “Breaking it to the Parents”. Both of Louella’s college age children are leaving for England to pursue their careers. After years of learning to live with Motherhood, Motherhood (a beautiful and mysterious woman who speaks to Louella in her reflection) up and leaves Louella without direction and feeling pathetic. In the hopes of finding inspiration for her life list, Louella goes for a walk where she is killed in a hit and run car accident. She finds herself in Otherworld, a place where the visually apparent world she has known (made of matter) and the hidden, shadow world (made of dark matter) collide. The Arch Angel, Michael challenges her to a test where she is the unlikely winner of a new vocation; working and fighting among demons who, while invisible to humans, wreak havoc and do harm all in the name of evil.
